Choosing and Using Your Brushes
You don't need a massive collection of expensive brushes to paint beautifully. A few high-quality, versatile brushes will serve you far better than a dozen cheap ones. We recommend starting with a medium round brush (size 8 or 10) and a flat brush for washes.
Essential Brush Techniques
The way you hold your brush and the pressure you apply dramatically change the mark left on the paper.
- The Tip: Use just the very point of a round brush for fine lines and details. Hold it vertically for maximum control.
- The Belly: Press down slightly to engage the wider part (belly) of the brush for thicker strokes and filling in areas.
- The Roll: Roll a round brush between your fingers as you drag it across the paper to create organic, varying line weights, perfect for branches or vines.
